Position Description

Under the general direction ofthe Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory Manager, the Interventional Radiology Supervisor and the hospital nursing policies the Interventional Radiology Nurse is responsible for professional nursing care and related assistance to patients upon admission to the department. The nurse’s purpose is to assist and support the patient so that imaging procedures can be performed in a safe and efficient manner. To accomplish this, the Interventional Radiology Nurse is required to assist in all aspects of the procedure except for the use of radiation producing equipment. The Interventional Radiology Supervisor is responsible for providing the nurse with appropriate orientation and training in the radiation safety aspects of the imaging equipment they must work with. The Interventional Radiology Nurse is also responsible for the maintenance and security of the Department’s medication supply, monitoring of patients receiving conscious sedation, and keeping appropriate medical records relating to patient care.

The Interventional Radiology Nurse will provide all imaging personnel with in-service education and training relating to patient care and patient care devices. The Interventional Radiology Nurse will actively communicate with physicians, nursing units, and family members concerning the patient’s well-being, exam status and care, and will perform appropriate patient teaching as needed. The Interventional Radiology Nurse will actively communicate, cooperate with, and assist other nurses. The Interventional Radiology Nurse’s patient care skills are subject to the policies and procedures of the hospital nursing service. Responsible on-call participation is required for this position.

  • Assesses plans, develops, implements and evaluates care of a specific patient population.
  • Develops Plans of care with realistic goals.
  • Obtains informative, accurate and concise nursing assessment.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of nursing process.
  • Identifies patient problems, symptoms and psychosocial needs.
  • Utilizes clinical experience and knowledge to anticipate potential patient care problems and/or emergencies and makes provisions to meet them.
  • Validates data obtained by others by reviewing plan of care and admission assessment for a specific patient problem.
  • Interprets diagnostic data and incorporates it in the plan of care.
  • Plans, implements, sets priorities, and performs direct care or delegates responsibility and collaborate with physicians and other heath care team, members.
  • Makes nursing revisions in plan of care for specific patient population based on observation, changing needs of the patient, and available data obtained by other members of the health care team, patient and significant other.
  • Works with patient / significant other and appropriate members of the health care team and/or community agencies to plan for discharge.
  • Performs procedures basic to the general well-being of the patient.
  • Knows responsibility for own communications and communicates through appropriate channels.
  • Records informative, accurate and concise nursing observation and reports observations to appropriate persons.
  • Receives physician’s orders either written or per telephone. Records and carries out as ordered.
  • Keeps immediate manager or designee informed of patient care problems.
  • Interacts and communicates appropriately and effectively with other departments and coordinates patient schedules based on the needs of the individual patient.
  • Anticipates and communicates need for patient teaching to physician and receiving unit.
  • Interacts and communicates appropriately and effectively with health care team to keep them informed of changes of patient plan of care.
  • Delivers organized pertinent report in a timely manner.
  • Assumes responsibility for discussing, clarifying and/or questioning medical therapy through effective
  • Teaches patients and/or significant other about disease process and treatment plan.

What qualifications you will need:

  • Registered Nurse
  • Associate Degree required
  • 12 months Acute Inpatient experience required
